Our founding fathers developed a pretty nice document way back there at the tail end of the 18th century. It had three distinct branches of government, each equal in power, and each put there to make sure the other two branches of government did not become too strong. Throughout the document you can see that the framers feared despotism so much that they added checks and balances.
